Technical interview with very little technical questions?

I had a four hour long superday for a REPE firm for an analyst position, and one of the interviews, which lasted an hour, was a technical interview as well as an interview to gauge my working style. I think they just asked four, maybe five technical questions. The two interviewers seemed way more interested in getting to know me and having a conversation and I can’t tell if this is a good or bad thing. I think it may be bad because why wouldn’t they want to ask further technicals to really understand my capabilities before making a decision to hire me? After I answered each technical question, they responded with “good” but I feel like I probably could have answered some of the questions better.

First of all, congratulations on getting to the superday stage. That's great news.

Second, sounds like you are over-analyzing and splitting hairs. I have been in the industry for a while and met plenty of bright, technically competent people who have poor EQ and unpleasant working style. If I were your interviewer, asking 3-4 technical questions would be sufficient for me to understand your technical capability. This is especially true for REPE, where there are (no offence!) fewer technicals compared to the mainstream PE. Similar to the interviewer you mention, I would also focus on the behavioral part of your resume for a good bit of time in order to get to know you better.  As an aside, if you had not aced your technical questions, then I would have stuck to the technical questions for longer, grilling your further and not have had as much time to focus on other aspects of your resume.

This is just my perspective.

Don't stress. Good luck to you,

Tamara
