Thoughts on the Independent / Fundless Sponsor Model
Currently considering a move to an independent sponsor. Has been around for ~10 years, closed 9 platform deals, solid returns (~3x realized), relatively well known, and plan on staying the independent sponsor model since it's just worked for them.
My primary question is if I want to lateral later down the road, does coming from an independent sponsor make it more difficult?
I wouldn't go unless you are senior enough to be running your own deals. Benefit of those platforms is the carry is deal by deal with better economics vs backed by fund. If you don't have meaningful carry, the risk isnt worth the upside
That's helpful but if I were to come in as an associate / senior associate and then try to lateral down the road, does the indepednent sponsor label make it more difficult to make the switch?
I don't think so but don't expect to go to a large fund. The work you did is similar to what a LMM fund would want you to do but market dependent ofc
