Thoughts on the Point72 Experienced Analyst Program after 5 yrs. in PE?

Graduated college in 2020 (from an Ivy) and went straight into PE. Currently a Sr. Associate trying to break into public equities. I applied directly for analyst roles at some of the top multi managers but that didnt go past model test and call with biz dev person. I have an opportunity to join the P72 experienced analyst program but I have a few concerns with it, mainly:

  • It's 9 months and I dont want to be doing homework for 9 months I want to be on the desk working. I feel like I have enough financial modeling skills to not have to learn for 9 months. would rather learn on the job
  • I also feel like yes it might pivot me to a good seat but if I cant get placed im out of a job
  • I feel like with my background if I cant get a direct analyst seat I should explore other exit paths. Either way I'm leaving PE but if an analyst seat isnt in my future im not sure whether this program is any better
  • Do they have any garden leave for this program too? As in if you dont get placed you cant go find a seat elsewhere?

You think they learn modelling for 9 months? Do you think stock picking is just financial modelling?

You got first round screened by biz dev, which college graduates could pass, and are concerned the academy is a waste of time?

I have anecdotally heard of people who do the Academy and then go to another fund for what its worth

I said I have the oppt to go meaning I have the offer in hand....and yes after 5 yrs in PE I dont think I need 9 months of prep. theres plenty of ppl that go directly. again thats why im asking. this is not meant to be satire. im looking for serious answers only, thank you

was talking abt getting a job in a pod directly, if u can't do that, u clearly need some form of training. particularly to apply your PE skills to publics/ST trading and to unlearn anything you've learnt from PE that poisons how you view opportunities

yeah there's been a few that haven't got analysts seats but still a small % of the overall scheme afaik, I did a different training scheme so not too clued up on academy

would just do the experienced academy, if ur not garbage and not very unlucky you'll land on someone's desk

if you don't want training then don't do the academy, just join a pod and see what happens

everyone in PE I've worked with in this gig has struggled to adapt, and if your PM won't teach you, you're shit out of luck, do not underestimate how fundamentally different this job is to PE...they don't think about businesses the right way to make money

i wouldnt have hesitations if a full time offer was guaranteed (p sure balyasny guarantees for a similar program). i would def take this over direct job to ramp up more seamlessly. if i could get a direct seat i would but thats what im saying, it hasnt worked out.

my concern is you do this for 9 months and then you dont have a full time seat

You could get a seat and then get fired 2 weeks later anyway. This is the life you're signing up for now, no guarantees.

There isn't much to it. They're different jobs, trading in a long-term business quality mindset to an opportunistic/probabilistic one isn't going to be natural when you're 26 and have built up habits. Not to say you can't find success with that mindset, there are PMs that will find use from it.
