Updated Views on Ribbit Capital?
Wondering if anyone has any views on Ribbit Capital? I know the firm is overall very media shy / rarely gives interviews and as a result there is not a ton of information on them available online. Seems like a pretty incredible track record though (founded 12 years ago as an earlier stage VC fund focused only on fintech / crypto, early backers of Robinhood, Brex, Coinbase, Nubank, Credit Karma, Revolut, invested in Bitcoin in 2012, etc.) The founder, Micky Malka, has also been ranked number 2 on the Forbes Midas list of top 100 VC investors in the world for the past 2 years.
It also seems like the fund sizes have mostly continued to grow and they have raised money quickly (up to Fund X, Pitchbook says ~$12B AUM with 25 employees, but I think only ~10 of those are investment professionals). From what I can tell they're flexible in structure in that they can invest in anything from seed stage, to growth, to publics as well, although they don't invest in public equities too frequently and venture & growth rounds / partnering with founders is their bread and butter.
I found an article from Pitchbook from 2022 that said Ribbit, Thrive, and Benchmark were the VC's with the highest batting average of backing unicorns. It also seems like Ribbit invests around the world out of the one small team, so you'd probably get a pretty global investing experience.
I wondered if anyone had any views on them (either positive or negative)? Obviously they were founded as a fintech focused fund at the perfect time during a fintech boom decade from 2010-2021, especially at the same time as the mobile revolution through the rise of the smartphone which enabled a lot of innovations in fintech. But what do people think about the opportunity in fintech going forward? Would also be curious if anyone has worked across from Ribbit on any deals, has heard anything from anyone that works there about culture, mentorship, lifestyle, upward mobility, etc., or anything else to share (positive or negative)? Do you think it would be a good place to join / spend a career? How would you compare them to top generalist VC's (Sequoia, a16z, Benchmark, Founders Fund, Kleiner Perkins, Accel, Khosla, etc.)?
Thanks!
Don’t know anyone there but I’ve heard some of their peer firms (think Moo Capital, Oink Equity Partners) are struggling
Who’s throwing MS at this it’s hilarious
Meow Infrastructure Partners (MIP) has been doing well lately. Their latest fund raise beat expectations with over $10bn in committed capital.
Definitely not comparable to the firms you mentioned. Solid AUM but performance in more recent vintages has been mixed/not great, I think. If you want to focus on fintech then it is probably a good seat
