What happens when your firm goes public?

I was just reading the news about General Atlantic planning an IPO, and was wondering if anybody had any color as to what this process means when you actually work at the firm. I know a number of PE firms are traded publicly, do employees get any sort of equity compensation, and is there any sort of payment made to employees when the firm IPOs? Has anybody been at one of these firms when they went public, and did anything change culture-wise?
