Whats a good industry for future PE activity / value to be generated?
Second year consultant here that wants to pivot to IB eventually. While there are many sector coverages in our firm that are inherently on the more unattractive sides for PE sponsors (i.e., oldschool / asset heavy and headwind facing industries such as steel, coal, automotive ...) it is hard for me to discern as to what sector knowledge might be of particular value when moving to PE later down the road.
Tech would be the obvious answer (or at least hast been the past decade), however, I find it very hard to land engagements there.
What do you think about life sciences and health care? Is this still a promising sector for a typical finance / econ background or is this gatekeeped for non-MD/chemistry people?
MD-type backgrounds are more of a requirement in biotech and/or at HFs. Most of the buyout PE activity in healthcare isn't in pure "R&D-driven" types of businesses but on the ecosystem around it, so your profile could work yes.
