No thread is likely because PE bonuses are much more structured and most people have visibility to a target in their contract each year. There’s certainly room for variability but I’m at a growing MM and have hit my target both years (same with every other Associate I work with). The only time I’ve seen bonuses be larger than expected was due to promotion, which is still essentially planned. The only time I’ve heard of bonuses coming in less than expected was due to poor fund performance coupled with poor fundraising momentum (which is key). Even now, as long as you’re at a fund that’s not struggling to even exist and your seniors aren’t horrible, which is a bigger problem, it’s never really much of a surprise.
