6 months on the job doing AM at a top fund and I HATE it. Does anyone have advice on how to know when to leave / seek opportunities?

The job market is drying given the current market conditions - rising interest rates, inflation, etc. I’m afraid to leave because of worries around a looming recession

i just feel like cog in the system doing me singing BS tasks and I’m sick of it. Any advice?

I’m in a similar situation except i couldn’t take the hours and interview process at the same time with what I was doing. Was at my last firm for about 2 yrs, and I just didn’t enjoy the work anymore around the year and a half mark. Expressed it to my MD, probably wasn’t the smartest decision but i was under water and I just didn’t feel the need to keep it to myself. They ended giving me 3 weeks to look for work, which was generous. Thought I had something lined up and then I didn’t get it. It’s been about 2 weeks now without work and things look promising with the companies I’m talking too but it’s definitely a terrible time now in this situation given the uncertainty.

With that said, if you can’t take it at your company now try to interview is hard as you can because if you so leave it will be tough. No one knows what is going to happen in the next few months. If you can stay, definitely stay and wait it out and if something comes up and you get an offer, then your golden.

What don’t you love about AM? Or is it more your firm/team you don’t enjoy?

I am in institutional AM and personally, I love it. If you’re stuck behind a computer just doing monthly/quarterly reporting, then yeah, I would understand. Big part of AM but in addition to that, I love my team, work on acquisitions, tons of UW, hold/sell analysis, major capex projects, etc.
