Being Difficult During Internship - How Much Does That Affect a Possible FT Offer

Hey guys, curious how much fighting on pay if getting market (when some people are getting $0) and being kind of forward in negotiations affects a full time offer?

Like if you're at a shop getting $20 an hour and push for $30 when you know some people are working for free, I'm assuming maybe doesn't look the best as employer may see it as asking for every dollar you can get after a month or two and especially if you're aggressive about it may rub people the wrong way.

Seems like that and your attitude can affect a full time offer as HR/boss will mention this when hiring comes up - what are people's thoughts from the employer side dealing with interns?

EDIT: What about if you're in graduate school with past experience or it's an internship extension, seems to be the same consensus

Wait, are you fighting for what you would get paid if you got the FT offer?  Or trying to get paid an extra $10/hr during your internship?

The former is fine, the latter is... not a good look.  Your labor has value, so don't work for free... but you are an intern, so your presence is probably as much of a drag on people as it is a help.  If the pay isn't what you want, work somewhere else.

I'm not personally doing it, but yes the post was asking about increasing pay as an intern. Just to get thoughts, because at some places I've heard of getting less or more than what was posted and some people were complaining. I agree though, as an intern not worth it and from there if you do ask for a pay increase I was asking what the affect on full time would look like.

If an intern asked me for more money, that would be an automatic disqualification for full time employment. Shows that they are entitled and have no situational awareness, and can't see the larger picture. An internship is a tryout for a full-time job. You add no value to the company and are in many cases a ton of work for the FT employees (ie, negative value). I'm not a big fan of unpaid internships because I think that disqualifies candidates who actually do need some money coming in the door, but complaining about your internship pay is wildly stupid.
