BREAKING INTO CRE- NEW CHIMP HERE
Good day everyone. Happy new year. Greatfull to Joe Stampone from astudentoftherealestategame for introducing me to this platform. Highly recommending everyone to check it out. I'm really passionate to work in CRE and preparing for that. It will be a career switch from accounting to CRE. Looking to become an analyst and work my way up. Need advice and guidance from everyone here who are far more senior and experienced. Looking to connect.
What exactly do you want in CRE, it's a pretty broad field. I'm sure you'll get better answers if you be more specific.

Network with alumni from your college who are already in the industry. Send cold emails to them asking if they'd be available to grab a coffee or chat over the phone. Ask them about their job, what they do, what they like about it, and advice they can offer to you. Don't come in asking for a job, build up a relationship so they will think of you when their firm does have some type of opportunity. If you can find people who made a similar transition from accounting to real estate those would be good people to hit even if they didn't go to your school. I've met people in the industry who were previously at the big 4, so they exist.
You can pick up technical skills in the meantime like financial modelling courses online. It's not super easy in that you could learn it in a few days but making progress on it or showing that you're trying to learn shows your interests.
Plus like one of the other users mentioned, there are numerous old discussions you could search for that will tell you about different roles or similar transitions others completed.

First, totally echo the alumni strategy (both from college and Big4), that is really the best path. Another good one is joining some real estate organizations, such as NAIOP, ULI, PREA, etc., no reason to wait. (clearly this is a little different during pandemic, but hopefully that will be past before long)... from here attend events regularly, volunteer on committes/events, look for mentoring ops, and otherwise open up these networks by right of shared membership.
