Dec-2024 State of the CRE Job Market
Figured I’d create a new one to see where the CRE job market is, since it’s been a while since my Aug-2024 post.
Please share what you’re seeing in the hiring market.
If you comment, it’s important to post whether you’re at the Analyst/Associate level, mid-level, or senior level, etc.
Personally seeing a decent amount of activity spread across development, REPE, and credit. NYC based. Associate / Senior Associate level.
All of the listings I see are Analyst/Associate level, but I’m seeing an increase in those at least. Hoping things start looking up for the younger people.
I've had less traction in the last two months than over the summer which is surprising. This is in NYC - mid level
Felt a little backwards to me but in the past month or so I have seen the most job openings all year and have had multiple interviews. I did end up accepting an offer and will start in the new year. I was looking for around 8 months and it was pretty bleak until recently. I expect Q1 to be a pretty active job market.
Hope I don't regret accepting a position now and then have the market turn to employee's having the leverage again in terms of total comp.
Edit: This is at the analyst/associate level
Nice! Are you switching jobs or were you in between jobs all that time?
I'm switching jobs! Funny enough, I posted a month or so ago about whether or not I should quit my job before having anything lined up. I got some tough love and realized that was probably a big mistake. Right after I made that decision I was blown up with interviews and one was perfect for what I was looking for.
Totally anecdotal, but I have noticed an increase in real estate job posting activity in the past two months (certainly relative to past 2+ years).
Trash in the southeast.
I feel like I see lots of elite Debt / equity fund postings in NYC. PIMCO, MSD, Some unnamed hedge funds. It’s just tough if you’re not in NYC - that’s where the bulk of the elite capital allocators are located
Is it just linkedin you’re seeing these posts?
Yeah LinkedIn and recruiter blasts. Deutsche bank special situations is another one I saw on LinkedIn
Any tips on breaking into NYC? I have strong institutional experience in investments & dev but struggling to even land interviews ... For the few interviews I have had, consistently finishing in the final round so it's not my experience that's lacking ... probably my location
I‘m not in NYC. My best advice is wait for the job market to heat up. I was lucky and only changed jobs during red hot job markets (2018 and 2021). Anything less, it’ll be tough to get into NYC. All you can do is keep networking and reaching out to people
Some other NYC postings for junior roles (Analyst/Associate): Macquarie, Mack, Affinius
My team is hiring at the associate level - lots of applicants that are above the posting applying for the position just to stay in the game. Seems like we are at the low point in the market, or at least barreling towards it.
My gut is that the market is about 1 year away from starting to take back off, which means an uptick in hiring is likely in the next 6 months. I think 26 we’ll finally see things start to swing towards employees again, once the market comes back people will be hurting for staff and will start either promoting to retain or pouching people for big dollars. I think the switch will flip fast.
Interested to hear from others what there experience was like in other cycles.
Maybe its just me but while there does seem to be a good number of analyst/associate postings, they seem to be lower (relatively speaking) quality postings. Lots of salary below market or unknown firms.
Finally found an analyst position at the end of summer after a year of looking. Due to this, I don’t follow the job boards as much. But from a quick glance, it looks like there are more opportunities out there than when I was in the trenches. I hope it works out for everyone looking. After going through it, I wouldn’t wish unemployment on my worst nemesis.
Canadian Debt Associate here. Roles are coming back out maybe once a month at the analyst level but it appears that if you're trying to get to the sr analyst/associate level, it's looking tough. May need to take a pay cut just to move.
I am mid-senior level and positions on this side are fairly rare. I have found a few but there are a lot of people out looking also. There are also VP or SVP positions that look like the comp would be in line but they are way off. Like half of what you see in other spots. Typically those positions are with foreign companies doing business in the US or Multifamily AM or Aquisitions.
