Macquarie Real Estate Private Equity
What are views on Macquarie’s real estate private equity team in NYC? Spoke with one junior who left the company and didn’t paint the best picture on culture but didn’t provide much info on deals they worked on or comp. Is the team doing interesting deals in the US? Any insight on what comp looks like?
Based on previous WSO threads, Macquarie's real estate private equity team in NYC has mixed reviews. While specific details on deals and compensation aren't explicitly outlined in the dataset, here are some general insights:
Culture: Feedback on culture appears to vary. One junior who left the team reportedly did not provide a positive view, but the specifics of their experience or reasons for dissatisfaction are not detailed. It's worth noting that culture can be highly team-dependent.
Deals: There isn't explicit information in the dataset about the types of deals Macquarie's real estate private equity team is currently working on in the US. However, Macquarie is known for its focus on infrastructure and real assets, so it's likely their real estate team is involved in transactions aligned with these areas.
Compensation: While the dataset doesn't provide specific compensation figures for Macquarie's real estate private equity team, Macquarie has been noted for paying above street in some areas. For example, in investment banking, base salaries for analysts were reported as A1: $110k, A2: $120k, and A3: $140k, with bonuses around 100%. This could suggest competitive pay in their private equity divisions as well.

From what I understood when I dug in a couple years ago there's MAM REPE which invests out of a fund vehicle and then there is principal investing which I think is investing off their balance sheet and has had a rocky history, past couple years have been primarily credit investing.
When I interviewed I got the feeling the real estate principal group didn't have the best internal reputation amongst the other principal teams. That being said both groups seem to have stuck around so probably get some good experience.
They're a mess. I submitted my resume last summer and they cancelled their process. I interviewed with them again earlier in the year and then a week later they cancelled their process again. Yet they're constantly reposting their roles on LinkedIn.
I'm buddies with a couple of senior guys there on the principal investing team. They are in process of finding outside capital and have not been active in placing capital since they do not have much outside capital to place. I'm sure that it will eventually be a great place to work once they get all of their ducks in a row.
Isn't the whole point of the principal investing to invest off Macquarie's balance sheet? MAM raised a $1.9 B opportunistic real estate fund in 2024...
No. As someone mentioned above, different groups.
This is half true. Principal finance has plenty of funds to deploy, just not for the RE team.
