Math major considering RE Development Career - Need advice
What initially made me consider RE development is how it is an interesting, entrepreneurial space, and it combines my likes of design, engineering (I have experience with MechE), and problem solving. I've done a few of my own "small business" things quite successfully the past years. I'm thinking of learning the ropes then trying my hand at raising money and starting my own shop.
I landed an RE development internship for this summer. I haven't had the greatest exposure to pure development, but understand acquisitions work more due to finding locations for restaurant expansion / writing proposals. As a result I've also gotten to know the LA market much better.
My question for you all, especially those in development - does it make sense to consider this trajectory? I won't be using my math degree at all. I'll be working for much less pay than I could get applying my quantitative skills.
If it makes sense, anything I should do during my senior year to help make this transition easier? Will I be able to work with interesting, intelligent people in this space? Any recommendations on cities or firms where I would fit in? (I have begun research on locations but would be cool to hear in this context).
I would appreciate any advice you all can give. Thank you.
