you probably won't be able to add value unless you're getting them coffee. shut up and listen. Ask questions on a select basis when in a group setting and save most of them for when you're one on one with someone from your team with experience. this is an amazing opportunity to learn.

thank you. I just don’t know what that looks like in RE. I know that grunt work is possible and I’m happy to do everything you said and more. but I feel like I can take some pressure off the partners maybe through different skills. any tips on different skills would be a huge bonus.

I agree with @SBPref12" - you're not going to be adding much value and they don't expect you too either.

Some things to do:

  • Carry a notebook around with you always. Write down any detail, anything that may seem important, or anything you don't understand - ESPECIALLY if someone says something that sounds matter-of-fact and everyone else in the room immediately gets but you don't. Ask when you have 1 on 1 time.

  • Get it in your mind now that no task is too small. Get coffee for the team, scan things and save them to the server, pick up trash you see on the ground as you're walking the site as a group, etc.

  • This may not quite apply to you yet, but the two biggest pieces of advice I received as an intern were "Nothing happens unless you make it happen" and the importance of having a sense of urgency. People call the developer the "Quarterback of the team" but a lot of times it's a 1-yard goal line run and the running back hit the pile already and they just need a little push to get them moving forward. Put your shoulder into it.

  • Try to find things that can be "yours." This doesn't have to be pretty - reorganizing files, cleaning the break room, handling pool furniture delivery, etc. It is good practice to take on a task and see it to completion. The absolute best development interns are the ones you can point in a direction and don't have to constantly oversee or assign tasks to.
