Quant Trading to Real Estate Developer?

Is this career path possible? Stupid? I’ve seen lots of posts about IB->RE or REPE but does anyone go from HF to RE? I started out of undergrad working at a large MM Fund and am dissatisfied with the work (aware of the potential drop in comp)

Well I don't think it happens super often mainly due to the difference in skillset and junior level compensation.  I think there are plenty of larger shops that operate in multiple verticals (HF, PE, RE, etc.) that would give you a look (2Sigma launched a RE arm not too long ago). Smaller regional firms might not give you as much consideration given the lack of direct experience and potential flight risk.  Job market is tough right now so you may have to start in AM or the Lending side if you want to pivot soon, Acq & Dev will take some time to pick back up.

Curious why you want to leave the HF space for RE? I would imagine your work is intellectually stimulating enough and comp trajectory is extremely good.  If you can answer this question well then I think you'll be fine.

FWIW I would hire someone with your background in a heartbeat assuming you were interested in RE and willing to learn.  Definitely beats having to hire the boss's third son.
