REPE Fall22 Internship

Looking to get an internship in REPE for the coming fall / winter semesters. Does anyone have advice on how to go about this? Since there is a limited number of advertised internship positions advertised online, what should my reach out method be?

Any advice is well taken.

I researched all firms within my region/city and emailed all I could find an email for. Don’t be impersonal and try and show how a position could be mutually beneficial (i.e. how you can help them and they can help you via learning opportunities). Very few will get back to you, that is just a fact of the matter, but like a few people I know, some will and may end up turning into an incredibly valuable experience. Don’t be afraid to target smaller firms as typically these are the places where you get to be more hands on and be a jack of all trades.

Second what the person said above regarding casting a wide net and pounding the pavement. OP, did the same thing as you during COVID lockdown and cold emailed / cold called a ton of local shops. All you need is one - just be persistent, do some homework on each company before you reach out and try to formulate a short pitch as to why you could add value to their shop specifically. Need to realize most of these shops will lack the resources/desire to train you formally like a large BB/MF would, so need to show that you are a self-starter that is quick and eager to learn. But highly recommend you push forward with this - had that small shop on my resume and while it was a total no-name boutique outside of the local area, I was able to contribute a lot to multiple live deals and talk waayyyyy more to this during next recruiting cycle than the kids that did bullshit 8-week gigs at a Big 4 / "leadership program" at a BB.

I specifically mentioned my past experience - I'd interned at a search fund and also worked at a RE brokerage shop. Not glamorous stuff but showed them that I had a base level of understanding and wouldn't need to be completely babied. Can't speak for your experience here but would generally do my homework on their investment strategy, types of deals they like to chase, maybe look at the current team they have and think of any gaping holes you can see? Just gotta be creative here. At the end of the day, it's the thought that matters just as much here as the actual reality of the pitch - I like to think that while the shop that hired me appreciated my past experience, they appreciated much more my initiative to research them, prep, and think up how I could help them. Nobody moves up in RE without others helping them, and most people in the industry will understand this and try to pass it forward however they can. Good luck!
