REPE Investment Analyst (Portfolio Management) vs. Investment Banking Analyst (MM)

Hi all, I'm at a bit of a crossroads and could use some advice. I have offers for an investment analyst - portfolio management position at a REPE firm (~$15b AUM) and for an investment banking analyst offer at a MM boutique. This is following the conclusion of my studies so it would be a first full-time role for me.

I think the REPE offer is interesting, but I am concerned that PM is not 'technical' enough since I suspect there is less immediate deal exposure. I want to have exposure to the modeling and deal process because I think it can support my career growth further down the line, which I think the IB role could provide.

Ultimately I want to work in a buyside role, so I am evaluating whether starting in the IB role will open me up to a lateral into PE buyside, or if it is more prudent to start in the PM role in REPE and hope to lateral internally to acquisitions. Thank you for any advice!

Congrats on two great offers! You should think about how much you really want to do CRE before going with the PM role. It's possible to lateral but based on your comments about deal exposure, portfolio management probably will not satisfy that desire. The IB role will certainly set you up for a much wider range of opportunities in the future (which includes RE). Unless you are in love with the portfolio management side of RE, I would recommend the IB route first.
