Road to cre analyst

This is my first time posting on any forum, so I’ll try to keep it brief. I’m a 26-year-old male who started realizing his potential a bit later in life. I'm currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Financial Management with a focus on Real Estate in Denmark and will be graduating in January 2026. As part of my degree, I am required to complete a 12-week internship starting on August 25. Not putting my money on getting one in the us, but you'll never know.

I would love to work as a commercial real estate analyst or in a similar role in the U.S., but I understand that this is not an easy field to break into, even for people already based there. I'm seeking feedback on my plan to be considered for a job or a summer internship.

Right now, I am taking the "Breaking into CRE" course by Justin Kivel. After that, I'm planning to complete the Google Data Analytics course, followed by training in Microsoft Power BI, and finally gaining experience with Tableau, as I’ve noticed many internships on LinkedIn list these skills as requirements.

Should I make any changes or pursue different courses? I am aware that I might not get hired by a big firm initially, and I'm fine with that. I'm also open to taking a job in a different area if it means I can get my foot in the door with a good company.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your path to becoming a commercial real estate (CRE) analyst:

Steps to Enhance Your Profile:

  1. Courses and Certifications:

    • Breaking into CRE Course: This is a good start as it provides foundational knowledge specific to commercial real estate.
    • Google Data Analytics Course: This will help you develop analytical skills that are highly valued in the industry.
    • Microsoft Power BI and Tableau: Proficiency in these tools is beneficial as they are commonly used for data visualization and analysis in CRE roles.
  2. Internships and Experience:

    • Internships: Aim to secure an internship in commercial real estate, even if it's not with a big firm. Smaller firms can provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of the industry.
    • Networking: Leverage platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the CRE field. Attend industry events, webinars, and join relevant groups to expand your network.
  3. Additional Skills and Knowledge:

    • Financial Modeling: Consider taking courses or certifications in financial modeling, as this is a critical skill for CRE analysts.
    • Real Estate Market Knowledge: Stay updated on market trends, property valuations, and investment strategies. This knowledge will be crucial during interviews and on the job.

Potential Adjustments to Your Plan:

  • Consider Real Estate-Specific Certifications: Look into certifications like the MIT Commercial Real Estate Analysis and Investment online course, although it is pricey, it is well-regarded in the industry.
  • Practical Experience: If possible, gain practical experience through side projects, such as analyzing local real estate markets or working on small real estate deals.

Alternative Paths:

  • Local Opportunities: While aiming for a job in the U.S. is great, also consider opportunities in Denmark or other European countries to build your experience.
  • Related Roles: Be open to roles in related fields such as property management, real estate finance, or market research, which can provide relevant experience and help you transition into a CRE analyst role later.

Summary:

  • Continue with your current course plan but consider adding financial modeling and real estate-specific certifications.
  • Focus on gaining practical experience through internships and side projects.
  • Network actively and stay informed about industry trends.
  • Be open to starting in related roles or smaller firms to build your experience.

By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared to pursue a career as a commercial real estate analyst. Good luck!
