Tampa Culture/Opps?

My girlfriend and I both live in NYC together. We’re both 27 and have been here since we graduated college. I did IB for 2.5 years and now currently working in PE, and she’s a lawyer at a corporate law firm. As you can probably guess we both work decently long hours. We’ve started talking about settling down recently and leaving the NYC culture and lifestyle behind for long term. We’ve been discussing cities to settle down in and we’re both drawn to Tampa, as we’re both from Florida, and she has an opportunity there through a family friend. What type of opportunities exist in Tampa (I have 2.5 years in Regal IB, and 2 years in REPE, looking for some thing that would pay good and no more than 40-50 hours/ week, so probably some CRE/ CM position) and how is the overall culture in Tampa?

Tampa offers a mix of professional opportunities and a lifestyle that many find appealing, especially for those looking to leave the high-pressure NYC environment. Here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

Opportunities in Tampa

  1. Investment Banking and Finance: Tampa has a number of regional boutique investment banks, such as:

    • Hyde Park Capital Partners, LLC
    • Skyway Capital Partners LLC
    • Kendrick Pierce & Company, Inc.
    • Midtown Partners & Co., LLC These firms may offer roles with a better work-life balance compared to NYC, though compensation might be slightly lower.
  2. Commercial Real Estate (CRE): Tampa is a growing market with significant real estate development and expansion. CRE roles, particularly in acquisitions, asset management, or capital markets, could align well with your background in REPE. The city's northward expansion and reasonable property prices make it a hotspot for growth.

  3. Corporate Finance/Capital Markets: With your IB and REPE experience, you could explore roles in corporate finance or capital markets at local firms or even larger companies with regional offices in Tampa.

  4. Work-Life Balance: Many roles in Tampa, especially in CRE or smaller finance firms, are likely to offer the 40-50 hour workweek you're seeking, though this can vary by firm and role.

Culture in Tampa

  • Lifestyle: Tampa offers a more relaxed lifestyle compared to NYC. While it doesn't have the scale of NYC's arts, culture, and dining, it has a growing scene of good restaurants, museums, and live theater. You might need to seek these out, but they are there and can be surprisingly good.
  • Community: Tampa has a mix of young professionals and families, making it a great place to settle down. The city is also known for its friendly and welcoming vibe.
  • Outdoor Activities: With its warm climate, Tampa provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including beaches, parks, and water sports.
  • Cost of Living: Significantly lower than NYC, which can make it easier to save and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Final Thoughts

Tampa could be a great fit for you and your girlfriend, especially given your Florida roots and her potential opportunity there. With your background, focusing on CRE or boutique finance firms could provide the balance you're looking for. Plus, the city's growing economy and lifestyle perks make it an attractive option for settling down.

Florida is a great place to be, and Tampa is awesome, but like the other guy said, I think you'd find more job opportunities in South Florida, even in areas like Boca or Delray even. I mean from Coral Gables to West Palm Beach there is just tons of real estate firms there. With that said, cost of living is high here so if you can find a high paying job in Tampa could be a great pay/income ratio.
