What type of developer are you - Name on the Wall vs. Hidden from the Public

Many developers like to have their name as the company name - it either strokes their ego or they’re too lazy to get creative. The pros are obvious, but the cons are that if shit goes south, your name (“brand”) gets dragged through the mud. People also tend to hate developers so everyone views you as an asshole and some people even target you.

Other developers stay hidden from the public buried behind LLC’s and attorneys. The fewer people who know them, the less likely they are to be involved in lawsuits or nimbyism.

If you were to go/already went out on your own, which route would you take and why?

I have a (very small) RE investment and management business on the side where I own and manage a handful of multi-family properties in my market.  I chose to go with a totally random name instead of something like "Bob Smith Capital"/"BS Real Estate"/"Smith Properties" etc. for the extra anonymity in case some lawsuit happy attorney wants to come after me and so if tenants figure out my name they still just think I'm some random PM and not the decision maker behind it all.

Hidden.  If you're good, the people who you want to know, will know who you are.

There isn't a single redeeming reason to put your name on the door, unless you are a broker and your name is your brand.
