Making your resume unique
I am going to be a sophmore and right now my resume seems pretty standard. Wealth management internship and college finance clubs. I am curious as to what some of you guys have done to add substance/character to your resume. What are some of the more unique and interesting things you've seen people do? Are there things people should be doing to make themselves stand out more? Thanks.
Make every letter a different color
In terms of content...
Become a more interesting person
Do you have any other interests besides finance? obviously. so include them in the interests. dont put reading the wsj/investing/following markets as your interests because it serves no purpose since they know you want to do finance already.
Join other clubs that interest you besides finance ones. I am in some writing clubs/ on the newspaper/ in many volunteer organization. all because i like them and am genuinely interested in those things. I am a sophomore and have had about 7 interviews, including 1 super day and ever single time, the interviewers always ask me about my interests that i have on my resume.
If you have ordinary interests than you are most likely an ordinary applicant.
Join the Army and become an Airborne Ranger. Not many people in the finance world have done that.
So turn my resume into a dos equis commercial... I guess my question was aimed at what are some of the interesting things you have seen people put on their resumes? My interest line includes: golf, triathlons, skydiving, and travel. Is an interest line enough? How does putting personal trading/investing experience on a resume look?
Draw a nude self-portrait on the back, then let the interviewer decide which looks better: tucked in or wild and free.
Post your resume and leave your identity blank; then leave a series of clues resulting in an epic catch me if you can style chase resulting in interview/offer.
But seriously, no one is going to look at your resume and be like oh wow, this kid is so unique, we need to give him a job! It's mainly something like "hm, this kid is interested in basketweaving! Me too! I gotta interview him. " (in which case if you can't talk in depth about basketweaving, interviewer may hold it against you)
Or: "wow, a quant who is a Magic champion - the guys at the quant desk have been looking for an extra player, he'll fit right in" (provided you don't bomb the quanty part)
So pretty much figure what would be your ideal working environment, and gear your resume to that
"Proficient in excel."
