Degraded for Going to Target School at Work
Ignore title but interned at an EB group in NYC this summer that used to mostly hire Wharton/UChicago types a few years ago but now has a lot more people from semi-target/non-target BBA programs. I go to a target but don't study "finance". Whenever I asked a job-specific question that wasn't AI answerable, I'd get comments from analysts/interns like "Don't they teach that at XXX?" or "Wow guess people from XXX are just like the rest of us." Analysts would also say they were "dumber than me" so they didn't get how I could be confused about something they understood. Other interns/analysts kept asking if I thought I was better than everyone or if I was planning to jump ship/rerecruit. At first I just ignored it, but eventually people started believing in that rhetoric and thought I was above the job. What was I even supposed to do in that situation? I ignored remarks but should I have shut it down?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, dealing with elitism or negative perceptions in the workplace requires a mix of professionalism, humility, and strategic communication. Here’s how you could have approached the situation:
Redirect the Narrative: When faced with comments like "Don't they teach that at XXX?" or "Wow, guess people from XXX are just like the rest of us," respond with humility and redirect the focus. For example, you could say, "Honestly, every school has its strengths, but I’m here to learn from everyone and contribute as much as I can." This shows you're not placing yourself above others and are focused on collaboration.
Address Misconceptions Directly: If people started believing you thought you were "above the job," it might have been helpful to address it in a calm, professional manner. For instance, during casual conversations or team interactions, you could say something like, "I really value the opportunity to work with such a talented team. Everyone here has been incredibly helpful, and I’m learning a lot from all of you."
Build Relationships: Take the time to connect with your peers and analysts on a personal level. Ask about their experiences, career paths, or even non-work-related interests. Building rapport can help break down preconceived notions and foster a more supportive environment.
Stay Professional and Focused: While it’s tempting to ignore remarks, sometimes addressing them respectfully can prevent them from escalating. However, always maintain professionalism and avoid being defensive. If the comments persist or become hostile, consider discussing the issue with a mentor or someone you trust within the organization.
Prove Yourself Through Actions: Consistently deliver high-quality work, show eagerness to learn, and be a team player. Over time, your actions will speak louder than any assumptions or remarks.
Remember, as highlighted in WSO threads, elitism and biases are unfortunately common in finance, but how you handle them can shape your reputation and relationships. Confidence without arrogance, humility, and a focus on teamwork are key to navigating such challenges effectively.
