Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's an assessment of your chances at landing a spot in the Vanderbilt MSF program:

Academic Profile:

  • GPA: 3.64/4.00 (potentially 3.7 by semester end)
    • This is a solid GPA and aligns well with the academic expectations for Vanderbilt MSF.
  • Coursework:
    • Finance major with quant courses including Calc 1 & 2, linear algebra, intro to stats, advanced business stats, and intermediate macro.
    • Your quant coursework is decent, though more advanced quant courses could strengthen your profile.

Extracurricular Activities:

  • ECs:
    • Analyst roles in investment clubs during sophomore year.
    • Lack of leadership activities is a weak point, but involvement in investment clubs is still positive.

Internships:

  • Internships:
    • Three internships at no-name boutiques with 10-20 people.
    • Relevant mandates to discuss, which is beneficial.

GMAT:

  • GMAT:
    • Applying to get this waived.
    • If waived, ensure other parts of your application are strong to compensate.

Other Considerations:

  • Bogeys:
    • One withdrawal and one deferral due to illness.
    • These should be explained in your application to avoid any negative impact.

Overall Assessment:

  • Acceptance Rate: 44%
    • Encouraging, but still competitive.
  • Chances:
    • Your GPA and coursework are strong points.
    • Lack of leadership in ECs and boutique internships are not deal-breakers but could be improved.
    • If the GMAT is waived, ensure your application highlights your strengths and addresses any weaknesses.

Recommendations:

  1. Strengthen ECs: If possible, take on leadership roles or more active participation in clubs or organizations.
  2. Highlight Internships: Focus on the relevant mandates and experiences gained during your internships.
  3. Explain Bogeys: Provide context for the withdrawal and deferral to mitigate any concerns.
  4. Apply Early: Applying early can sometimes improve your chances.

You have a reasonable shot at Vanderbilt MSF, but addressing the weaker areas and presenting a well-rounded application will be crucial. Good luck!

Seems like a potentially viable profile to be admitted, but the fact that you don’t have any profile stats in the +90th percentile of competitiveness means you may not want to waive the GMAT.

While you probably have an average chance of acceptance, I’d work on a stellar GMAT score if I was you.

Take the GMAT and get a top score. Then apply and you may have a better chance. Gpa is fine, experience is fine.

What would you consider a top score?

I hope I can provide some insight here. Currently at Vandy's MSF program. I was at a non-target undergrad and missed the recruiting timeline for everything including full-time as I was exploring other career paths. The program itself is a game changer. In the same classes as MBA students; MBAs have the option of specializing in investment management or corporate finance, we take all of the classes as an MSF student. We also get priority during registration over MBAs for some classes because we are a one year program. Outstanding network of alumni (it's the oldest MSF program in the country) and great on campus recruiting. It enabled me to recruit last minute for an IB internship this summer as well before starting the program. Biggest thing I can say for admissions is nail your why Vanderbilt story.

Hey lifo! I am currently applying for the MSF program at Vandy. I got invited for an interview and I'm wondering if you could share, in case you remember, how your interview was and the questions they asked. Vandy is my target school and I want to really nail the interview. Being international student, I have to extra prepare due to the accent. What would you say is the best approach towards the "why the Vanderbilt story", if you had to think as an admissions officer?

Thanks!
