Community college transfer ?
How much of a disadvantage I am if I transfer from a community college to a elite school like mcintire, mccobs, dyson, gtown. I live in cville so I have a good chance of getting into mcintire at uva since over half of the applicants admitted are from community colleges in va, and I am do quite well at cc. I am taking 18 credits with all a's. Also is a internship necessary, and what are my chances of getting one as a jr when I transfer.
currently a junior--i transferred from cc to a target school and was invited to multiple accelerated processes this summer, received offers from JPM and Citi before deciding that recruitment is exhausting and don't want to pursue any more banks. it's all about how you sell yourself and how much you hustle your first year. dont know how great of a target UVA is, but feel free to message me if you have any questions!
I second this. Transferred from a cc and networked pretty hard. Landed interviews with every bb except goldman and Deutsche. Have a baml super day Tuesday. All about how bad you want it. I’d gladly help you any way I can regarding positioning yourself well going into recruitment. Feel free to PM me. I got a lot of help from people on this forum—they’re equally responsible for my success thus far. Happy to pay it forward bud.
hey I’m a rising sophomore at my community college with a 3.8 gpa and I’m in a similar situation as you. would you mind giving me tips on how you landed all those IB interviews
Does going to a community college before transferring to a top school make you worth less in the job market? (Originally Posted: 02/27/2017)
Comparing these 2 people. 1. Went straight to NYU or Columbia right out of high school. Graduated. 2. Did poorly in high school. Went to community college. Graduated. Transferred to NYU or Columbia. Graduated with the same degree as Person 1.
Is person 2 worth less in terms of salary in the job market and human capital because he went to a community college first? How do employers who tend to hire from top target schools view people who went to a community college at some point in their academic careers?
Maybe not inherently worth less, but you'll have drastically less networking opportunities and extracurriculars if you go to community college first.
Personally, I think both examples ended up with the same degree. Also, some people do the junior college to four year in order to save on generals. Kicking ass in college does help to override shitty high school performance. I had interviews where they asked about high school and told them I under performed due to varying interests. Some people will automatically pick the constant performer. Others will look at the final outcome and judge according to who they met vs what they were. Ultimately, assuming both candidates have the same personality and affability the constant achiever will most likely be selected.
I would argue that Person 2 shows grit and determination by recovering and learning from early mistakes. I'm not a recruiter, just throwing in a couple of Lincolns.
Take as many classes at your CC to transfer well before a summer to get your university GPA. Hopefully during the summer when IB recruiting starts. Network extensively and continue to take the most difficult classes. Join relevant clubs and put something weird on your resume (like you collect rare pokemon cards).
Does transferring to a target uni from a community college stop me from IB directly from Undergrad? (Originally Posted: 05/06/2015)
Looking into transferring to UCB/UCLA/USC/Vandy. If i transfer from a community college (currently attend University of Florida, would start at CC in California this summer and attend for a year) to one of those schools, would it have a significant impact on placement?
Won't be an issue if you don't turn it into an issue. I went to a CC for a year before transferring to a target. This summer I will be doing a sophomore summer BB IBD internship.
Last fall while trying to network I had a conversation with a IBD global group head at MS/GS/JPM and he asked what I did for an internship the prior summer. I told him I packed all my belongings into my car and drove across the country to start at my new school since I was a transfer student. He asked where I went to school before and I almost sheepishly responded that I went to a community college in the Pacific North West. He looked taken aback, gave me his card, and told me to make sure I get in contact with him again. If anything, the fact that I was at a community college and transferred to a school that is notoriously difficult to transfer into sealed the deal for me.
Don't be a slouch, show a good reason for your actions, and hustle. With that combination you can get yourself anywhere.
The short answer is that no, it doesn't. As the poster above said, some might even view it as a positive.
No one is going to know that you're a transfer student unless you tell them. I don't list the place I transferred from on my resume...and it has never come up in interviews. No one cares.
Out of curiosity, why are you looking to transfer from the east coast to the west coast? It just seems like a huge move to me. Being from the west coast...I just can't imagine having transferred all the way to the east coast. But if you are sure that's what you want to do...go for it.
I've just heard some IB ask for full college transcript, in which case Id have my CC classes on it.
And i'd be transferring to USC/UCLA. I want to be in LA. currently in a not so appealing environment.
Answer is no -- I transferred from a CC to a target and got a SA offer at top tier BB (GS/MS/JPM)
I know I'm late, but I transferred from an out of state CC to McIntire. McIntire's acceptance rate is not 6% for transfers, these people don't know what they're talking about. It was 16% when I transferred in (2016) - just graduated recently. But sometimes the transfers will often get fucked by career services and just employers. I had my cc on my resume and had a tough recruiting process. Sometimes things workout how you want them, other times they don't but I wish you the best of luck!
Im a rising sophmore at CC and UVA Mcintire is one of my target schools that I want to get into. How are things now? did you get a FT offer?
