Consortium | What Kinds of Experience Is Needed To Gain Membership?

Planning on applying via the Consortium on Rd 2. I don't have the best stats, so I don't have delusions in the kinds of schools I can get into (and I prefer smaller programs anyway).

I've got my main essay down pat. Done the optional GPA essay (since it's crud). Now I'm at the Consortium mission essay. And this is where I'm getting mixed signals...

From talking to many schools, getting the Membership and Admitted are two seperate things. I'm thinking however that's the PC thing to say (just like how they constantly use 'holistic' for describing their admin process when they likely have a fairly systematic approach), and this thread verifies what I was thinking: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/consortium…

Yes I'm a URM (Hispanic) but I care more about getting into school than the fellowship. If the mission essay has any impact on that, it changes my whole view of the process and applying through it. Instead putting reach schools only and applying seperately to more realistic programs to increase my odds.

So from your guys honest POV, I got 3 main questions:

1) Can the Consortium Mission essay hurt your chances of getting in? 2) Does the # ranking impact my ability to get into the desired school (ie: putting a reach low, or putting a T-30 school as #1)? 3) What kind of 'experience' is needed to qualify for the mission? I don't work at a non profit, and nothing in my work is altruistic. I do some small mentoring but it's nothing official. I did a lot of volunteer work in college but that's it. How extensive does this have to be? How close does the person who 'vouches' for me in the recommendation have to be?

Hello ToeDrag, If you go to the consortium website you'll find plenty of information about it. I haven't done the program, but went to an information session a few years ago. You apply to colleges in the consortium by ranking them. The consortium fellowship is given out based on your acceptance into a particular school and how much they want you to attend. Not everyone who applies to colleges through the consortium earn a fellowship and fellowships at some schools are more competitive than others.

I will try and attend the NYC event. Not 100% sure at this point, but I usually go to that one. Looking forward to saying hi to some of you there.
