Dilemna about Uni choice. All opinions welcome
Hey everyone, so I am hoping to study econ and Uni of Nottingham provided results day goes well. In the event that it doesnt, my insurance is Econ at Sheffield.
Id like some advice on if it would be better for me to stick with the insurance choice at sheffield, or if I should sacrifice that choice and try and look to get into notts through clearing to access their facilities and high finance societies.
An issue is the courses in clearing arent exact ones I would want to do such as accounting and finance, not particularly keen on accounting. With econ and politics, idk much about politics. and Financial mathematics is just 75% maths. Industrial economics might be an option worth considering??
Also is there stuff I could say over the phone to Nottingham to let me in for econ even if I dont get the exact grades required?
Thanks for the help in advance!
If you don't get the grades for Nottingham econ, resit
Sheffield will do you more harm than good, just like all other uni’s in clearing
Hey! Idk if I would be able to use the gap year fully efficiently so Im not actually keen on resitting coz it might feel like a "waste of time". Would you expand on why not going with clearing unis?
Apply for Durham, Warwick or one of the good London unis through clearing when you get your grades and if there's a spot available - if you want to get in to IB you want to give yourself the best chance possible and these unis will all be better than Nottingham (nothing against Nottingham, I got in to the industry from a similar uni, but it's 10x harder).
Nottingham and Durham are pretty much equal for getting into banking. Both solid semi-targets and were fairly equally represented from my experiences during springs. London is a step up but in terms of entry requirements, it's going to be significantly harder than Nottingham to get an offer and make the grades for. Same could be said for Warwick as well, although probably not quite as well perceived as Oxbridge/lse/imperial.
Also it's VERY unlikely that any LSE/UCL/Warwick econ courses will be in clearing.
Durham >
Yehh about what the other person said too, those unis dont really go into clearing so I would have to settle with nottingham or worse.
Would you share how it was much harder for you and how you overcame that?
Can't advise on the clearing process but I do know of people switching from econ & politics to straight econ at Nottingham after the first year. If you got in through clearing and ended up not liking the Politics side of the course, then switching may be an option (no guarantees though, also these unis will generally have a minimum requirement to switch course for second year entry e.g. 65% in econ modules).
Oh wow okay thats not something I had considered. Is it too risky though to get rid of my insurance choice and then look for such an option through clearing
I'm not completely sure how the clearing process works sorry. On the off chance that one of these courses is in clearing, you could call them to see if they would accept your grades and give you an informal over-the-phone offer before you reject your insurance choice.
Go through Clearing to Nottingham or another semi+ target.
if grades less than AAB - resit A-levels. Whatever you do don't go to Sheffield if you are interested in high finance
Thanks for the reply, can you share more about not going to sheffield, as I have heard they have some support, albeit not as much as Nottingham
bro everyone is saying don’t go that means don’t go unless you don’t care about breaking into finance
