Duke Econ

I’m fortunate to be a Freshman at Duke this year. I’d like some input on the actual difficulty of attaining a job in banking in Charlotte,NC or possibly consulting. I’ve read a few posts regarding connected families,etc- my backround is rural,no connections, nor any when applying ( Caucasian, low income, commuted btw high school and local college to be competitive on my app). Was really wondering the reality of landing a job, assumed it had a lot to do with gpa but didn’t know about the scarcity of jobs if not from any influential backround. Thank you

Join the investment club, the business orgs on campus etc. and recruiting will be quite easy tbh especially if going for Charlotte office. You are obviously smart and can grind and thus will have no problem landing multiple offers coming from duke. Try to make connections through clubs etc with older kids that can help you out but you will be fine. IMO Econ is not relevant study what you want and what you can get a good gpa in.

- Current senior at Duke feel free to pm for more info

Wondered if you could tell me the difference btw the Econ Finance conc. and the certificate in Markets and Management. Wasn’t sure if there was a benefit of one over the other. Certificate looks more interdisciplinary.

Ya certificates are sort of like an interdisciplinary minor.
Economics can be a major and you can shooed to do a finance concentration within that major. It is not more classes but just means you focus on finance electives vs other Econ electives.
Finance is also offered as a minor which lets you skip all of the imo boring and useless econ core classes

Have a close friend coming out of the program in 2024 who got an IB SA position in NYC with PJT. Work hard, stay dedicated, and it should be very attainable.
