EU Target vs US Semi-Target vs Queens

I'm in quite a dilemma, my goal is it to at one point during my career live in the US. But I understand that because of being international my chances will be worse, especially looking at my "personal" list of colleges.

Super-Target: HSG Bocconi

Target: Queen's (canada)

Semi-Target: CMC Emory Middlebury UIUC SMU

While I understand that especially HSG offers me the most possibilities (native german), I'm still wondering if it will be more difficult to move within a BB from LDN/FFM to the US, or getting an offer from the universities I just mentiond.

Also how does Queen's compare to SMU/UIUC etc. in terms of placement for us AND canada?

How much of your life do you want to spend in the US? Would a study abroad stint do? Also you have the opportunity after an EU degree to work and live in the USA on a J-1 Visa. A lot of large European banks use this program extensively.

If you are German, I would really stick to HSG or if you speak Italian, do Bocconi. None of the US schools that you mentioned there place nearly as well as those two. Middlebury places ok but you will have to network a lot more because it is a semi-target.

Not sure on the Canadian schools; sorry can't help you there.

From my current POV it seems like I want to move permanently. Also what about WHU/EBS as safeties? And my final question, assume I would get into an average target school (stern/duke) do I have the same chances "breaking in" as a domestic student

Also how difficult will it be to move here with a J1 Visa and then find another Bank who would sponsor me a h1b Visa?

Not sure about WHU/EBS at all. You absolutely don't have the same chances of "breaking in" as a domestic student: H-1B is a crapshoot and a lot of employers don't want the headache/expense if they have a similarly qualified candidate who doesn't require sponsorship.

I don't know if you can convert a J-1 into an H-1B; I don't think so but I'm not a lawyer so you should double check that.

Can comment on Queen's as I'm a current student there. It is definitely underrated in terms of US finance placements, but is not close to the top US targets. I know roughly 15 juniors who are interning in either NY or SF in FO finance roles, with approximately 80% in IBD (GS/JPM/CS/Moelis/PWP/RBC etc.). There are another 15-20 juniors who are spending their summers in an IBD role in Canada (RBC/TD/CIBC/BMO/CG) so the opportunities are definitely there for you to lateral either for FT or after a few years into your analyst stint.

Thanks! Is someone able to compare queens with Bocconi? Bocconi would cost me $7k while queens would be $80k. I understand that this would be a huge commitment but I don't speak italian.

For what it's worth. I have seen a decent amount of people work in a BB western european office and then transfer to a NY office within the firm!
