Freshman at IU Kelley, need help with club recruitment

Hi, I am currently a freshman at IU Kelley school of business and need help with club recruting. IBW is absurdly competitive here, and I have a very low chance of getting in. Can anyone from a Kelley, or a semi-target help me with advice on what to do as a freshman here that can maximize my probability of landing IB?

I most likely won’t get into IBW, what other clubs here have good placement? Does the private equity club do well?

To maximize your chances of landing an investment banking (IB) role as a freshman at IU Kelley, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Join Relevant Clubs and Organizations

  • Attend club fairs and sign up for multiple finance-related clubs to explore your interests. Clubs like the Investment Banking Workshop (IBW) and Investment Management Workshop are key gateways to Wall Street.
  • Even if IBW is highly competitive, being active in other finance or business-related clubs can help you build skills and connections. Look for case competitions, finance societies, or consulting clubs.

2. Network Strategically

  • Get to know current members of the IBW. Networking with them can provide insights into the application process and help you understand what the program values.
  • Attend events, info sessions, and workshops hosted by the IBW or other finance-related organizations.
  • Build relationships with upperclassmen and alumni who can guide you and potentially refer you for opportunities.

3. Focus on Academics

  • Maintain a strong GPA, ideally above 3.6, as this is often a minimum requirement for IBW and other competitive programs.
  • Excel in key courses like introductory accounting and finance, as these are foundational for IB roles.

4. Gain Early Experience

  • Look for internships or part-time roles at boutique investment banks, wealth management firms, or other finance-related companies during your freshman summer.
  • Participate in case competitions hosted by investment banks to develop technical and analytical skills.

5. Develop Technical Skills

  • Start studying technical finance concepts early. Resources like the WSO IB Prep Course or other guides can help you master valuation, financial modeling, and other key skills.
  • Learn Excel and PowerPoint, as these are essential tools in IB.

6. Leverage Diversity Opportunities

  • If you belong to an underrepresented demographic, explore diversity recruiting programs offered by banks. These programs often provide mentorship, training, and early access to internships.

7. Prepare for IBW Applications

  • Even if IBW feels out of reach, prepare for the application process by building a strong resume, practicing behavioral interviews, and honing your technical knowledge.
  • Understand that IBW admission can sometimes depend on subjective factors like social fit or connections, so focus on building a well-rounded profile.

8. Alternative Pathways

  • If IBW doesn’t work out, remember that many students still land IB roles without being part of the workshop. Networking, maintaining a high GPA, and gaining relevant experience can still open doors to top banks.

IU Kelley offers a strong platform for finance careers, so stay proactive and consistent in your efforts. Good luck!
