Going to B-School without significant

Hey guys, so I'm thinking about applying for 3rd/4th round applications for MBA programs soon and taking the GMAT sooner (obv). I graduated in spring and I had a two month long internship doing coding stuff. I majored in Economics and Finance. Some people told me go to grad school so I want to gauge you guys' opinion about my situation and if I will even get into a decent program.

I am 20 so not really in position to give advice but how many applications have you pushed out? How many interviews have you netted? And how far have you made it in the process with the companies that you interviewed with? Also what kind of jobs are you gunning for?

Hi Fama-French,

Since you just graduated undergrad, you do not have enough experience to successfully apply to MBA, which usually require 3-5 years of work experience. You have the right idea of taking the GMAT, and you should really try hard for that 700+ GMAT.

I would recommend you apply for MSF/MSM, see https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/faq/should-i-get-an-msf-mfin-or-other-b… . Many of these programs are designed specifically for recent grads with less than 2 years of work experience and are only 1 year long. You will also save $$$ on tuition (~55k for 1 year MSF/MSM vs 150k for 2 years MBA). The top MSF/MSM programs consistently place students at BBs and MBB. You can always go MSF, work for 3 years, and then apply for MBA with the same GMAT score before it expires after 5 years. Around ~40% of MSF students have 0 work experience since they are going straight out of undergrad, so you have decent chances at getting into a top program provided 700+ GMAT. However, it will be extremely difficult if you try to apply for round 4 deadline (round 3 is March 1 and you don't even have GMAT yet) as most of the seats will already be filled by then. If you spend the time on GMAT and apply by Round 1 deadline (~Nov 15, 2020) for the following year, you should have great chances.

Good Luck!

Hi Fama-French,

Your chances of getting into an MBA program starting in Sept are slim because MBA programs want more work experience than you have. As suggested by another poster, you may want to consider a MIM or MFin for now. These programs are aimed at early -career applicants and do place at top companies of all kinds.

Best, Linda
