GRE - Breaking Low 160s Quant Plateau

Took my first live GRE a few days ago. Scored in the low 160s on the quant section. Was disappointed with this as that’s exactly where I was scoring on practice tests multiple weeks ago. Since those tests, I’d spent countless hours cranking practice problems. The lack of improvement is evidence that I spent all those hours working hard, but not working smart.

Has anyone had a similar experience with the GRE quant or the GMAT and have advice for precisely identifying my deficiencies and overcoming this plateau?

Breaking through a plateau in GRE Quant requires a strategic shift in your preparation. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a game plan to help you identify and overcome your deficiencies:

1. Analyze Your Mistakes

  • Create an "error log" or "correction copy" as suggested in WSO threads. Log every mistake you make during practice, categorize them (e.g., careless errors, conceptual gaps, timing issues), and revisit these problems regularly.
  • Focus on understanding why you got a question wrong. Was it a lack of understanding, misreading the question, or running out of time?

2. Target Weak Areas

  • Use resources like Manhattan GRE strategy guides or ETS Quantitative Reasoning books to strengthen specific weak areas. These materials are highly recommended for their structured approach.
  • If you’re struggling with specific question types (e.g., Data Interpretation or Geometry), dedicate focused study sessions to those topics.

3. Refine Your Strategy

  • Shift from cranking out problems to mastering strategies. Recognize patterns in question types and learn the simplest, most efficient ways to solve them. As WSO users often emphasize, GRE Quant is about strategy as much as content.
  • Practice identifying traps and misleading answer choices. Many GRE questions are designed to test your ability to avoid common pitfalls.

4. Simulate Test Conditions

  • Take full-length practice tests under timed conditions to build stamina and improve time management. Use ETS PowerPrep tests for the most accurate simulation.
  • During practice, force yourself to move on from questions that take too long. This will help you avoid getting stuck during the actual test.

5. Focus on Silly Errors

  • Many WSO contributors highlight that silly errors are a major culprit in Quant. Maintain an "error list" of common mistakes (e.g., misreading data, calculation errors) and review it before each practice session.

6. Consistency Over Intensity

  • Instead of cramming, aim for consistent daily practice. A routine of 1.5 hours of Quant daily, as suggested in WSO threads, can yield better results than sporadic, intense sessions.

7. Consider a Tutor or Course

  • If self-study isn’t yielding results, a tutor or structured course like Magoosh or Manhattan Prep can provide personalized guidance and accountability.

8. Mindset and Confidence

  • Don’t let a plateau discourage you. As WSO users often note, improvement comes from persistence and smart adjustments. Stay positive and trust the process.

By implementing these strategies, you can break through the low 160s plateau and achieve your target score. Good luck!
