How does MSF recruiting work?

Current 3rd year undergrad student. How does MSF recruiting work if the full-time programs are only 10 months?

Do you need to recruit early and get an internship the summer before you head into MSF? Or do you wait until you get into the program and recruit with MBAs

Haven’t been able to find anything clear on this.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how MSF recruiting typically works:

  1. Recruiting Timeline for MSF Students:

    • MSF programs are usually short (10-12 months), so the recruiting process is compressed. You need to hit the ground running from day one.
    • Full-time (FT) analyst recruiting is the primary focus for MSF students. Most MSF programs align with FT recruiting cycles, which often occur in the fall.
  2. Internship Before MSF:

    • If you're currently a 3rd-year undergrad, securing a Summer Analyst (SA) internship before starting your MSF can be highly beneficial. It gives you relevant experience and makes you more competitive for FT roles during the MSF.
    • However, SA roles are typically designed for undergraduates. If you miss this opportunity, you can still pursue off-cycle internships or unpaid roles during your MSF to build experience.
  3. Recruiting During the MSF:

    • Once in the program, you’ll primarily recruit for FT analyst positions. Networking is critical here, as many MSF students leverage connections to bypass traditional HR processes.
    • Smaller banks or regional firms may be more open to hiring MSF students for internships or FT roles, especially if you network effectively.
  4. MBA vs. MSF Recruiting:

    • MSF students do not recruit alongside MBAs. MBA recruiting is for more experienced candidates targeting associate-level roles, while MSF students compete for analyst positions, often alongside undergraduates.
  5. Key Advice:

    • Start preparing early. Research target firms, polish your resume, and practice technical and behavioral interview questions.
    • Focus on programs with strong placement records in your desired field (e.g., investment banking, equity research).
    • If you lack prior internships, prioritize gaining experience during the MSF, even if it’s unpaid or off-cycle.

In summary, if you’re aiming for an MSF, securing an internship before starting the program is ideal but not mandatory. Once in the program, prioritize FT recruiting and leverage networking to maximize your chances.

In that case, is a 1-year msf (say, Vanderbilt) worth it if you don't have an internship in your desired function?

I see people going from non-IB internships -> 1-yr msf -> FT IB but wonder how unnecessarily hard or lucky that is, especially in tough times.

Depends what a non-ib internship is. If its still finance or finance adjacent it's you're still able to convert. If you have nothing to show and have been working in concrete, yeah good luck.

Personal opinion, and something I have experienced myself in considering 1-yr programs is you better have a damn good backup plan.

in my unqualified opinion yeah that's pretty decent. there's gonna be kids who have never worked a summer in their life.

When I was considering, I was already working nearly 2 years in a non-financial field, plus I was mainly focused on euro programs (LBS), as a canadian which made it awkward and being at the end of the gold rush of jobs. Decided to sit it out for mba.
