IB College Options
First post here, I am in the midst of deciding where to attend in the fall. My two options are NYU SPS where I would play club hockey and then try to internally transfer to Stern. The other option would be an LAS st. Olaf where I would play NCAA hockey hockey and is cheaper but I would have to eventually externally try to transfer to a target. Any insight would be very helpful thank you!

Olaf is going to be incredibly tough if you are set on IB - it's possible to break in, but would not recommend for high finance in general.
Would it not be more cost efficient to try and transfer from Olaf to a target and possibly easier than being at NYU and competing with all the Stern kids?
I have no experience with transferring so can't comment on that front (also depends on magnitude of $ diff).
Are you from MN? Why not go to the U then transfer? Surely that's even cheaper.
I was in a similar situation as you and I chose the LAC for hockey, however, back then I did not know I wanted to do IB. It was super hard to get on track for IB from there. If I was you, I would go with whatever sets you up better for your career (NYU). Let's be real, neither club nor NCAA D3 hockey will get you anywhere, so pick whats better for your professional career. If you want to talk more, happy to do so.

Going to St. Olaf would really limit your IB options to MN locations.
I would suggest using LinkedIn to find all the Olaf alums in IB to get a picture of how many there are. There probably aren't a lot, but the few that are would probably be really receptive to meeting/talking with you and helping out a bit.
Olaf does have a pretty good academic reputation in MN (although not IB focused) so you would have that going for you but it will be a grind none the less.
Yep, and even w/in Minnesota, Olaf is a clear #3 at best in terms of academic reputation, behind Carleton and Mac.
Yeah I definitely agree.
Of the MIAC schools it does seem like St. Thomas has the most representation in IB/Finance (they do have a business school though).
The saving grace for a lot of the MIAC school in MN is how proud Alums seem to be of their school and their willingness to help out their own. (At least my experience as a MIAC guy).
Good point bringing up St. Thomas. Certainly seems like there are a lot of St. Thomas grads in finance w/in MN, but my assumption (and this purely my own view, not backed up by any actual evidence so please correct me if you think this is wrong) is that once you go outside of MN (certainly outside of the Midwest), you'll do better coming from Carleton or Mac because of their much stronger academic reputations. Could also be self selection though w/ more of the St. Thomas student body coming from MN / Midwest so those grads want to stay in the area more.
Think you gotta take NYU for your career. Club hockey will still be fun and no pressure of being a varsity sport.
Hi OP, if you’re still on WSO mind sharing which school you chose? I’m facing a similar dilemma as you did and I’m leaning St Olaf (but I don’t play hockey lol). Would love to know which way you went
Hey, I decided to go the NYU route. About to finish my second semester and absolutely love it. I'm sure that the education is similar almost everywhere, but a school like NYU has so many resources. A quick personal anecdote that might help: When I went on my official visit to St. Olaf, the hockey guys and their friends who were showing me around asked where else I was looking at attending. After I told them, they basically started advocating for some of the other schools which was interesting. PM me if you want to discuss it any further.
