I genuinely have no idea what to think. I don't mean to come off as ignorant, ego-inflating, or an idiot for asking the question in the first place. Your thoughts and feedback on the issue would much much appreciated! Thank you

I appreciate the gesture, but I don't think I'll need the emails. Thanks a bunch though. The only reason I'm asking is due to the hyper selective nature of T-7 schools to begin with (particularly H/S/W). Applicants are extremely qualified to begin with and don't need a blemish to make things more difficult. (hence my concern)
Whats the worst that could happen? You apply, they say no, and you spent whatever amount on app fees. HBS says no to ~8000 people every year. If you get to the interview stage, they aren't going to invite you in to talk about why you pissed on a door while you were in your undergrad.

crazytennisfanSo for T-7 in general what're your thoughts with regard to this issue. Obviously I will apply to the 5 that I like, and hope for the best
crazytennisfanThanks for the input. I'm just curious as to what I ought to realistically expect from admissions committees
How would they even know this happened? I suppose in the application itself you might have to explain why you were put on probation, I would come up with another reason. (hint: lie)
I would order a copy of your official transcripts so you can review them yourself first. See if your probation status has any explanation tied to it on the transcript itself - like "misconduct" or "violation of student handbook" or whatever. Once you've confirmed this, you can craft your explanation from there - if you absolutely have to.
And if anyone knows other people with similar backgrounds, let me know how their results ended up working out. I'm trying to gauge the number of safeties/mid-levels to apply to.
Do any b-school applications even ask about disciplinary action? I was under the impression that only medical schools and law schools did in their dean certification. Also, only your school's disciplinary office has your disciplinary files and legally, they can't disclose it without your consent unless there are extreme circumstances.

This is correct -- they can't disclose without your permission, and I don't think B-school apps ask about it. Unless it's on your transcript or something, I really think you're okay.
Hi AverageJoe,
I would have jumped in a few weeks ago when you posted this query, but I've been away from WSO for a few weeks. Sorry!
It sounds to me like it is no big deal. I know you don't want to tell the whole internet what it was that got you in trouble, and happy for you to email me privately, but if it is not racial or have anything to do with violence or cheating, you are probably fine. Most applications have a question like,
Have you ever been warned or placed on academic or disciplinary probation from any post-secondary school, college or university?
If the answer is yes, then you can write about it in the optional essay. Assume that you have to come clean. Will it hurt your chances? Maybe. But the rank of the school has nothing to do with who will be bothered by it.
It will have everything to do with the school's own code of conduct and what it deems important.
Make sense?
Good luck!

Hey Betsy, do you know what b schools ask about disciplinary probation? Also, what information would the business school see on their end? From what I understand, the b school will not get any information regarding your disciplinary record, unless you give them permission in writing to access your disciplinary files. Even then, I doubt the b schools will be able to see the whole file, but only get a rough sense of what the nature of the violation was.

No, they don't have access to your files, but they may ask for voluntary disclosure. I think most ask the question. I went to my files and pulled a copy of the first one that popped up, it was from Duke Fuqua -- the quote I gave you above is a condensed version of a question on their data form. I am looking at HBS and Stanford GSB, and right now it looks like that question isn't on the regular app, but that doesn't mean it doesn't show up elsewhere. I am just not sure -- it depends on the terms of the application, and you have full access to what they ask.
You can create a dummy email address and sign up for any school you want and you will be able to see all the forms.

After being in discussion with my school (through the uncooperative rep on the phone), I found that the incident was made part of my permanent school record but was not considered formal disciplinary action. If it isn't on my academic transcript nor was there any formal disciplinary action (i.e. what the college deems "formal disciplinary action") will this be visible? My school has been pretty slow with getting back to me.
