Just got a return offer from MBB. Should I study for the GMAT?

Hello,

I just completed my MBB internship in the US and received a return offer which I’m planning on taking.

Since I don’t have to worry about recruiting my senior year, should I study for and take the GMAT? Or, more broadly, would an MBA be useful 2-3 years down the line?

Would appreciate any insight!

Securing a return offer from MBB is a fantastic achievement—congrats! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider:

  1. Studying for the GMAT Now:

    • It’s highly recommended to study for and take the GMAT during your senior year or shortly after graduation. Statistically, test-takers score higher when they’re still in college or soon after, as academic skills are fresh.
    • Preparing for 2-3 months and taking 6-10 practice tests is a solid strategy. Kaplan or Manhattan Prep are often recommended for materials. Remember, schools take your highest score, so you can retake it if needed.
  2. MBA Utility in 2-3 Years:

    • An MBA can be incredibly valuable for career progression, especially if you aim to pivot industries, move into leadership roles, or access top-tier networks.
    • MBB consultants often pursue MBAs after 2-3 years to accelerate their careers, and many firms even sponsor the degree.
    • If you’re considering deferred enrollment options (e.g., HBS 2+2, Stanford Deferred), having a strong GMAT score now will position you well.
  3. Long-Term Planning:

    • Even if you’re unsure about pursuing an MBA, having a valid GMAT score (good for 5 years) gives you flexibility.
    • Use your senior year wisely to prepare, as you’ll have fewer distractions compared to when you’re working full-time.

In short, yes, studying for the GMAT now is a smart move. It keeps your options open and aligns with the typical MBB consultant trajectory. Plus, with your return offer secured, you’re in a great position to focus on this next step!
