non-US MBAs

In WSO, I mostly see people talking about M7 schools. What are your opinions on MBA from European countries? INSEAD for example, is pretty strong and does well for Europe/Middle East/Asia recruiting. Kinda feels like Msc and MiM are getting ahead of European MBAs. European MBAs usually tend to have folk with longer work experience. What your opinion about these schools and how well do they do in terms of recruiting?

If the EU MBA was done by US citizens or LPRs, then the best programs might help in the US with recruiting (think Oxford et al). But if the MBA grad is a EU citizen or international, there is the visa problem and the lack of CPT and OPT. Why would a US based company want to hire someone they don't know, who is from another country, who hasn't studied in the US, and will most likely not win the H1b lottery anyway? These are thousands in attorney and filing fees down the drain for each candidate. It is legally possible and not impossible to do, but it is just not very likely to happen.

It would be far easier to land a EU based job with the EU MBA at a US company and then ask for a transfer after the minimum wait time has passed (ie after 3-5 years or so).

If the EU MBA was from a lower tier school or a place not known in the US, it might not work at all.

If the plan is to live and work in the US it should be easier to study there as well; this would make the student eligible for CPT, OPT, potentially H1b and maybe even permanent residency.

I am one of those individuals that are looking to pursue an European MBA.

In general, the rule is to pursue your MBA where you want to work. As an international student you may have visa issues, but going to a top MBA and meeting the requirements - no one can really stop you. Work hard, network, and get that job.

You stated it correctly - Msc and MiM are a big deal in Europe. They are also available in the US but those are cash cow programs. No one cares about them as much. European MBAs generally have around 1-2 more average years of work exp as compared to US B-schools. IMD is the only top European MBA that is extremely on the high side for average Age and work exp.

In terms of recruiting - I have researched INSEAD/LBS/HEC-Paris/IESE/Oxbridge. This includes networking on LinkedIn/employment reports/reading forums. My goal is to pursue consulting in Dubai (INSEAD/IESE are the big ones for this).

LBS - This school will place you anywhere in Europe, as long as you know the local language. Most people that attend this school either 1) Want to work in London (mainly IB/Consulting) 2) return home (not a big %).

INSEAD - Most of the people go here to pursue consulting. 50% end up in consulting - while others change their mind and pursue something else. Same as LBS for Europe recruiting, but also extends to Asia (Middle East, Singapore).

HEC-Paris - A mix of everything. Employment reports show a good promise, but their conversion to $$ seems a bit off. Regional school in Europe with also recruiting into London (but need to network a lot for it). So know the local language in the EU country you want to work in.

OxBridge - Ah where do I start. New Programs. University name carries the weight, B-School not so much. Has the potential - but mainly a UK school for employment. Still has a long-way to go.

IESE - Another regional school same as HEC-Paris, but seems to place well in Middle East as well for consulting. This school is like a back-up plan for me if INSEAD falls through.

In terms of US recruiting for these schools - Unless you are returning to your employer, don't really bank on HEC-Paris and IESE for it. INSEAD/LBS - Only some people have heard the name, but found that recruiting in the US has been a bit rough. To the point where the name has almost carried no weight. OxBridge - Everyone knows the main university but the B-school has yet to be valued in the US, struggles just like other European programs.

Take my comment with a grain of salt as this is based on what I have found. Unless you want to work in Europe/Asia, don't really bank on it. Additionally - Most of these schools are 1-year programs so that is another plus and good study abroad programs (can be found in US B-schools as well).
