Oxford for NYC?
I'm currently a HS senior from the US who didn't get into any Ivies/similar schools, but was lucky enough to get into Oxford, which is where I will probably commit. The school is fantastic and I think I'll have a great time there, but my main qualm is the location. Having been in the States my whole life, I really want to end up working in NYC after I graduate, but am worried about the feasibility of this as an Oxford student. I'm also not an American citizen (I have a green card) so I'm not entirely sure how possible me trying to move to US after graduating would be. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
The only downside is networking as you will be in a different city. Oxford is better than most Ivies. Just be happy that you got in there and work hard to get good grades. Also studying in UK will be a good experience.
You should be able to get a 2 year UK work visa after graduating from Oxford. So, get a list of companies with a London and NYC offices in the industry your interested, start networking and hopefully secure a position. Then lateral over to the NYC office at the right time. But, London is a great city and you may end up staying.
Disagreed with above that Oxford is better than most Ivies. It's very prestigious in general, sure, but if you want to stay in the US, any Ivy is better. US schools in general will make recruiting easier for you, especially since you're not a citizen.
My advice is that if you're willing to go to school in the UK, then consider getting a job there too, since London recruiting will be significantly easier coming from Oxford. Your thoughts on this may change once you network and make friends in the UK
Lmao why the fuck would you want to go to a cultural and financial cesspool like New York if you got into the gilded halls of Oxford? Don't let US propaganda fool you. London, Hong Kong, Paris, Munich and Zurich are far superior in terms of comp (PPP wise 2.5-3x higher because the dumb amerifats manipulate exchange rates), women (no 400lb purple-haired narwhals) and culture (able to speak proper English and eat real food).
Would you say that Cambridge or Oxford is more prestigious?
Congratulations on getting into Oxford. With a green card, you should not have a problem working in the US for summers and moving back eventually from an immigration point of view as you are will be legal to work here without having to get any other visa like a foreign student. WIth a name like Oxford, that should open doors for you. Focus on the companies that you are interested in and their internship recruitment timeline and be on it as soon as they open. Getting summer internships in the US throughout your academic years should help. If not, getting internships with US companies would also help although from what I understand, recruitment for the US and UK are done separately. All the best and enjoy England!
