Penn PPE or Econ?

Just transferred to Penn for the fall and I'm still torn between doing PPE or Econ. Came from a non-targ so really just trying to maximize my opportunities when it comes to recruiting for MBB and perhaps Corp Finance (not interested in IB). Would love if any past Penn alumni could chime in and tell of their recruiting experience from either one. Thanks.

If you're aiming to maximize your recruiting opportunities for MBB and corporate finance, both PPE (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) and Econ at Penn can be strong choices. Here's a breakdown based on insights from WSO discussions:

  1. PPE:

    • This major offers a multidisciplinary approach, which can be appealing to consulting firms like MBB. The combination of analytical, philosophical, and economic perspectives can demonstrate versatility and critical thinking skills.
    • PPE is particularly useful if you want to showcase a broader understanding of global and societal issues, which can be a differentiator in consulting interviews.
  2. Econ:

    • Economics is a more traditional and quantitative major, which can be advantageous for corporate finance roles. It signals strong analytical and problem-solving skills, which are highly valued in finance and consulting.
    • Be aware that Penn's Econ program is known to be theoretical, so you may need to supplement it with practical experiences or extracurriculars to stand out.

Key Considerations:

  • Recruiting Impact: Both majors can lead to success in MBB and corporate finance recruiting, but your GPA, extracurricular involvement, and networking efforts will likely play a bigger role than the specific major.
  • Extracurriculars: Demonstrating a clear interest in finance or consulting through clubs, internships, or leadership roles will be crucial. For example, joining consulting clubs or finance-related organizations at Penn can help build your resume and network.
  • Networking: Leverage Penn's strong alumni network, especially Wharton connections, to gain insights and referrals for recruiting.

Ultimately, choose the major that aligns more with your interests and strengths, as excelling academically and building a strong profile will matter most.
