The Comeback Kid
I have a story to tell and I want an honest opinion.
In 2009 I was a freshman in college at a non-target school with a goal of becoming a doctor. I got the swine flu second semester of my freshman year, and my grades took a slight fall. That following I started off strong, but unfortunately things took a dark turn. Some one in my family was physically and mentally hurt and it had a huge effect on me. Knowing my grades were not good enough for med school, I switched to biomedical engineering and barely passed with a GPA below a 2.3. I tried retaking classes and even saw a shrink because I just didn’t know what the hell was going on with me. After going through a self-abusive phase, I decided to go back to school and salvage my GPA. I knew I was smart enough to be a 4.0 student, so I got another degree in neurobiology graduating with a 3.96 GPA. I also was able published a paper in pharmacology as well as got my first summer internship in pharma consulting. Trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I started to follow capital markets and M&A activity in the pharma/biotech space. I always loved science, so I thought healthcare investment banking might be a good fit. Knowing nothing about business, I got a Master of Science degree in Finance (at a good state school), graduating with a 3.60 while working at a venture capital firm part-time. I thought I did enough to get back into the game, but it hasn’t been so easy. I have been trying to interview at IB firms, but no offers yet. Some have looked down on my low GPA, but I have to be honest because I can’t be fraudulent. I was wondering what are my chances of getting into an IVY MBA program based on my story (with a good GMAT obviously)? It has been a dream of mine to get that damn IVY stamp, but I’m not sure if admissions would be forgiving. I really would appreciate any and all thoughts on this matter.
thanks
