Transfer vs Stay

Hey guys,

So I'm currently a freshman studying economics at UIUC, and I'm really confused about where to go in life. I've figured out what I want to do for sure now: Finance. However, I have yet to figure out what IN finance I really want to do.

I'm having a lot of doubts about whether I'll be able to make it very far here at UIUC since the College of Business is really only famous for Accountancy, and not finance. At the same time, the Quantitative Economics degree was only introduced a couple of years ago.

I'm afraid I will have a lot of trouble with accessing higher pay brackets, and with career opportunities after graduating from here, and am wondering whether I should transfer out or stay here and figure something out. I'm also planning on pursuing an MBA from a prestigious university sometime in the future.

Given my research so far, I believe I have two choices: Transfer out to a university with a more prestigious business program, or continue here and finish a dual degree between Economics and Finance. If I do go for a transfer, I plan on applying to USC, Duke, Cost isn't a major issue. The prestige of university and job prospects are the main factors.

I'd focus on getting really good grades and then create a more expansive list of transfer targets.

USC places decently and Duke is a great school, but it doesn't seem like you've really given it much thought.

If money doesn't matter and you're not particularly happy at UIUC in terms of the social aspect, then yes you should for sure transfer. Why go to college at a place that won't give you great opportunities and that you don't really like.

The advice I give to all college students on here is pick a school that balances fun with a good education. Also, don't be so sure that Finance is what you want to do, there's lots of good jobs out there. Find a college that'll let you learn a lot and can set you up for a few different careers. Maybe consulting will be a better fit, who knows.

 

Thanks so much for your reply. Having done much more research, I'm looking at applying to NYU Stern, UMich Ross, Northwestern (Econ), and USC Marshall. These schools seem to provide me with a great start for the future.

 

Don't sell yourself short. If cost isn't an issue then throw out some transfer apps to some top schools as well. Research the schools, create an expansive list and then narrow down based on preferences.

If I was looking to transfer I would consider: Columbia Cornell Duke Georgetown USC Johns Hopkins Penn Boston College Villanova Notre Dame Vanderbilt

Research each school, learn the culture and see where you would be a good fit. Do you like east coast prep culture? Religious affiliation? West coast vibe?

 

check out IU's Kelley School.... Kelley is pretty transfer friendly (assuming decent grades) and its IB workshop has solid banking placement across Chi and NY. Social atmosphere would likely be similar to UIUC
