UBC Sauder VS Pitt business

Hi all. I’m an English student from London and have been given offers to finish my undergrad at UBC Sauder in Canada, or stay at the University of Pittsburgh’s Business School.

Which one is better for potentially doing a MFA at a top grad school and/or going into a high finance role?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. UBC Sauder:

    • Sauder is not generally considered a "target school" for high finance, but it has some notable strengths.
    • The Portfolio Management Foundation (PMF) program is a standout feature. It selects about 7 students per year, offering them guaranteed internships at top firms, mentorship, and networking opportunities with top Sauder finance alumni. Graduates of PMF have landed prestigious roles at firms like Goldman Sachs Investment Partners (GSIP) and KKR as PE analysts. However, the program is highly competitive, so don't rely solely on getting into it.
    • Sauder has a strong presence in Asian Pacific finance due to alumni connections, but breaking into high finance in North America (especially outside of Vancouver) can be challenging without strong networking.
    • Vancouver itself is not a major finance hub compared to Toronto or Calgary, with more focus on wealth/asset management.
  2. University of Pittsburgh (Pitt Business):

    • The WSO dataset does not provide specific insights into Pitt Business, but it is not typically recognized as a target school for high finance roles or top MFA programs.
    • Staying in the U.S. might offer better networking opportunities for roles in American finance hubs like New York, especially if you can leverage internships or connections during your time there.

Recommendation:

If your goal is to pursue an MFA at a top grad school or break into high finance, UBC Sauder might offer a slight edge, especially if you can get into the PMF program. However, if you plan to work in the U.S. or aim for a top MFA program there, staying at Pitt Business could provide better proximity and networking opportunities in the American finance industry. Ultimately, your success will depend on how well you leverage the resources and opportunities at either school.
