Undergrad school questions
Hi, guys. I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here it goes:
I'm about to start undergrad at Syracuse University, which from what I've read on the forums is completely non-target. If I wanted to become an analyst, would it be best if I transfer to a better, more expensive school(I'm at Syracuse with almost a full ride). If transfering is my best option, what schools should I look at? My SAT scores are slightly above average.; I have a 21XX. And my GPA sort of blows.its sitting at about a 3.5. Long story short: is transfering my best option? If so, could you list maybe some less selective target schools? Wharton is looking like a long shot, even if I manage a 4.0 at Syracuse.
Bump; I'd really liketo know. I'm feeling like I got duped by the admissions commitee at syracuse into believing SYracuse is a better school than it actually is.
Give it more than twenty minutes before you bump. But take a look through this forum, tons of non target kids have made it in based on networking and hard work. Work your ass off this year, get good grades, get involved and apply to transfer, it doesn't hurt. If you don't get in, and even before you reach that point, start networking! I mean you're on the east cost for god sakes. LinkedIn, alumni on the street, family friends whoever. You could always try transferring to NYU or something as well. Just remember, not much comes easy in life, your career included.
dude, to be honest with you, if you go to a top 100 undergrad school you can absolutely break into investment banking. Obviously you need to first meet the bare minimum requirements such as gpa, ec's, leadership activities, etc.... if you like Syracuse, stay there its not known as a competitive school.
So true, any top 100 undergrad business school student can get into IB. Just look up the top 100 undergrad schools according to US News, (don't use businessweek their rankings are off). But i'm pretty sure Syracuse's Whitman school of management is a top 100. btw for non targets the key is networking with alumni. I go to a non target and have a boutique interview this week, so trust me it works.
work your ass off and transfer to a top 30 school. ex. BC, NYU, Gtown, Ndame, Umich, UVA, Emory, Vandy etc etc etc.
They all send bros and brahs to the street
There are many lists of targets on here if you want that. Really though if you think you're gonna have a 4.0 at Syracuse you'll be fine with grades and have almost no debt after school. Just network your ass off and put in some effort and you'll be fine.
Thanks for all the replies. Yeah, I'll graduate with no debt, which is my primary reason for attending Syracuse. But I want to know if i'm missing out by not going to Emory or Vanderbilt, which were myother two choices. And if a transfer to a better, more expencive school would be the right move.
more expensive =/= better
you haven't even started your first semester yet, so let's not put the cart in front of the horse. if you think finance is what you want to do, then get involved with clubs, preferably with clubs that take weekend trips to network so you can meet people in the industry and figure out for yourself if finance is really what you want to do. you might find out that there is something else that interests you more.
I went to Syracuse for UG. There are a shit load of alumni on the street. Get into the Orange Value Fund and network and you will do well. The school is ranked 38th which isn't horrible and it is basically where all the rich kids from LI, NJ and CT go who couldn't get into a top school. All these kids intern in the city when they go back home.
Get a hold of Diz and Koveos. They are really great professors there.
As mentioned above, give it some time. Take all this shit you read on this site with a grain of salt, 3/4 of the advice is being given by freshmen who think they are big swinging dicks because they go to XYZ school. Go rock out at Chucks and get student tickets to the Dome. It is a big school with a lot to do and fun to be had. Congrats.
Thanks, man. I'm really excited. Are you on the street currently? Did you get internships the summer following freshman year? And what do Diz and Koveos teach? Sorry for so many questions. I'm really exited to be starting college and I want to make sure I make all of the right moves.
