University of Oregon MFin Program?

Hoping to get additional insight into this program. I realize that U of O may not be the best choice for pursuing a career in IB, however I am open if they have some solid recruitment (saw on their MFin page that they mention IB). For some background on myself, I am finishing up a non-target undergrad with a BS in Finance, 3.8 GPA, no GMAT/GRE, and two summer LMM tech M&A internships. I realized a little late (couple weeks ago to be exact) that pursuing a graduate degree straight from undergrad could be an option, hence my reason for never taking the GMAT/GRE. Looking to pursue IB as a full time career instead of a stepping stone into buyside. Given my situation, would pursuing an MFin be a smart step toward achieving the FT offer, or would it be more advantageous to consider an MBA down the line?

Cheers!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding your situation:

  1. MFin vs. MBA:

    • MFin Programs: These are typically more technically oriented and are popular among those aiming for Quant roles rather than traditional front office IB roles, especially in the USA. They are also more common for students with little to no work experience who want to break into finance.
    • MBA Programs: These are generally more popular in the USA and Europe for career advancement in IB. They are less common in regions like Hong Kong. An MBA might be more advantageous if you are looking to advance to higher positions in IB or transition to other areas like the buyside.
  2. Recruitment and Placement:

    • University of Oregon MFin: While not explicitly mentioned in the provided context, it is crucial to research the specific recruitment and placement statistics of the program. Look at the career pages of the MFin programs to understand job prospects and the types of roles graduates secure.
    • Networking: Regardless of the program, networking is essential. Use LinkedIn and other networking opportunities to connect with industry professionals and alumni to get a better sense of the program's effectiveness in placing graduates into IB roles.
  3. Your Background:

    • GPA and Internships: Your 3.8 GPA and two summer LMM tech M&A internships are strong points. These experiences will be valuable whether you pursue an MFin or an MBA.
    • GMAT/GRE: Since you haven't taken the GMAT/GRE, some MFin programs might not require it, but top MBA programs typically do. Consider preparing for these exams if you decide to pursue an MBA later.
  4. Timing and Strategy:

    • Immediate MFin: If you are looking to enter IB as soon as possible, an MFin might be a quicker route, especially if you can leverage your internships and academic performance.
    • MBA Later: If you are open to gaining more work experience and then pursuing an MBA, this could provide more flexibility and potentially better long-term career prospects in IB or other finance areas.

In summary, given your strong academic background and relevant internships, pursuing an MFin could be a smart step toward achieving a full-time IB offer, especially if you want to enter the field quickly. However, considering an MBA down the line could also be advantageous for long-term career growth and flexibility. Make sure to research the specific recruitment outcomes of the University of Oregon MFin program and network with industry professionals to make an informed decision.

exactly. he can probably get into a semi-target at least. but i'd be wary of paying extra tuition for programs that do absolutely nothing in terms of career support.

Yea hes the type of candidate they give money too also. I was a similar candidate and got 2 full rides + stipend for macc programs at a semitarget and at a target lol. Non mba graduate programs are desperate at times.

To clarify, yea, I'm not international. I am applying to other programs that don't require test scores (Villanova, McCombs, Boston U to name a few), but I don't care about prestige if U of O has good placement. Right now, it is a bit of a backup plan if I am not able to get into one of the more target universities.
