Want to attend Oxbridge: Master’s vs Second Bachelor’s

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a sophomore at HYPW and thinking ahead about going to Oxbridge mainly for the brand, alumni network, and prestige.

I’m deciding between two options:

  1. Applying for a one-year master’s degree after graduating
  2. Doing a second bachelor’s degree in PPE

The goal is the Oxbridge stamp of approval.

Would appreciate any thoughts from people who have considered or done either route.

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights to consider when deciding between a one-year master’s degree and a second bachelor’s degree at Oxbridge:

Master’s Degree at Oxbridge

  1. Time Efficiency: A one-year master’s program is significantly shorter than a second bachelor’s degree, which typically takes two to three years. This allows you to re-enter the workforce or pursue further goals more quickly.
  2. Prestige and Network: Oxbridge master’s programs are highly regarded internationally, and the alumni network is robust. Many professionals in finance, consulting, and other fields have leveraged this credential effectively.
  3. Cost Considerations: While master’s programs can be expensive, they are generally less costly than pursuing a second undergraduate degree, especially when factoring in the additional years of tuition and living expenses.
  4. Career Impact: A master’s degree can be a more direct route to career advancement, especially if it aligns with your professional goals. For example, programs like the MFin or MSc in Economics and Finance are well-recognized in finance and consulting circles.

Second Bachelor’s Degree in PPE

  1. Depth of Experience: A second bachelor’s degree, especially in a field like PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics), offers a more immersive academic experience. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about the subject and want to explore it in depth.
  2. Broader Academic Exposure: Oxbridge’s undergraduate programs are known for their rigorous tutorials and unique academic environment, which can be a transformative experience.
  3. Time and Opportunity Cost: Spending two to three years on a second bachelor’s degree means delaying your career progression. This could be a significant drawback if your primary goal is the Oxbridge brand rather than the academic experience.
  4. Recruitment Considerations: If you’re aiming to work in finance or consulting after the degree, you may need to recruit for campus positions again, as experienced hire recruiting might not fully credit your prior work experience.

Key Takeaways

  • If your primary goal is the Oxbridge brand and alumni network, a one-year master’s degree is likely the more efficient and practical choice.
  • If you’re seeking a transformative academic experience and are passionate about PPE, the second bachelor’s degree could be worth considering, but be mindful of the time and opportunity costs.

Ultimately, your decision should align with your long-term career goals and personal interests. If you’re leaning toward finance or consulting, the master’s route might provide a more direct path to leveraging the Oxbridge name.
