Career Transition
Hi all,
I'm currently a second year associate at an RIA in a major western US city, and I'm looking to make my way out of the industry, even if I need to move cities (or nations, specifically the EU).
The short of it is that I don't see much value in the mountains of paperwork and operational tasks I do on the daily, and it doesn't give me the opportunity to advance or really deal with securities or capital markets, which are my real passion and what I thought I was getting into as a (gullible) Econ grad that desperately needed income straight out of uni. For context, I do a diverse set of tasks, including trading client portfolios, partly managing client relationships, and the aforementioned dreaded paperwork/operational to-dos.
Among the many things suggested to me, a few finance friends recommended S&T as a bridge into a more securities-focused role that could even maybe get me into one of the major banks, as the sales portion would at least transfer part (?) of my client-facing experience thus far, and it would be a solid introduction to a firm I could explore other securities-adjacent opportunities at later down the line. I'm honestly willing to put in whatever hours to really master my craft, so I don't see an increased time demand as a dealbreaker. That said, I thought it would be best to consult you all with lived experience in the industry, as I know you won't blow smoke up my ass.
Therefore, my questions are as follows:
A: In your experience, do you think S&T (specifically sales) would be a good fit based off of past experience at a client-facing role at a mid-sized RIA?
B: If so, what type of firms do you see as most valuable to target in this transition?
Thank you all in advance, I really appreciate your help in finding my way.
