Commodities Trading exit
I am an associate (analyst promote) commodities trader at a BB in NYC. I am no longer interested in commodities trading (or trading in general). Other than going back to get my MBA, do I have any other potential exit opportunities?
I have been well comped so far and taking a pay cut is not really an issue.
You could try to go into origination for the commodity you were trading.
Can I ask as why are no longer interested? Is it because of the stress, boring, Dodd Frank/ Volker, tired of making markets?
Honestly I'm just bored of the industry. The slope of the learning curve has just been drastically reduced. I like learning, and I do not get much of it out of the commodities market anymore. Sure there are many minute details I can still learn, but its just boring.
Dodd Frank/Volker is not really a concern to me. If I was worried about that, I think I would look into a move to a trading house like Mercuria, Vitol, Glencore, Traf, Noble, etc.
Stress is not bad as I don't really take it to heart. PNL swings up and down, nothing to stress over IMO.
If it was the stress or work life balance, I would say head to a major/originator depending on your commodity. Commodity sales, risk or head hunting is an option but to be honest, if you are bored with trading there aren't many exit opps that are removed from trading.
I'd say collect your pay check while you apply to business school or plan to take some time off to find something more fulfilling.
