Fintech or S&T

Hello everyone,

I just got a SA position for JPM’s new Fintech role. The role is tied to their corporate and commercial divisions. It’s more tied to commercial but overlap with corporate. I have plans to beef up the resume with a CFA, Bloomberg and a higher GPA. I was wondering if a smaller banks S&T desk would be worth pursuing over this JPM role. Especially with the prospect of joining a FinTech company after JPM with maybe some equity. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

CFA probably isn't worth the time investment unless you wanna get more into asset management in my opinion. What's your goal long-term? Having JPM on your resume can be super helpful even if you wanna go into something completely different after. I friend of mine did a SA at JPM Private Bank and hated it, then landed a job in Corporate Banking somewhere else a year later. Doing a FinTech type internship doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna get stuck doing that after

I genuinely think I’ll enjoy the role from what I’ve heard. I just have a long standing dream of S&T and would love to keep that alive. I suppose I could keep my grades up and get a good GMAT score for the MBA route. I heard S&T is hard to get into with an MBA though. I’m sure I’ll be happy either way, I love the idea of both :).

Idk... the financial trading side is full of math people. Which an MBA really isn't (its more a "people skills" thing). CFA would be good if you're into modeling financial statements (think ER OR WM/AM). But tech ie quant-type trading doesn't need that. Pro-tip, if you're still in school, just start programming some trade ideas (like metrics you look for when executing), maybe a professor will help you as a "proof of concept." That would be huge to talk about in an interview.
