Getting into quant ?

A little background abt me : I recently finished my undergrad in maths and got into France’s top engineering school. At the beginning of undergrad I was considering going into finance, and I even did a spring week in London and an actuarial internship. However, since I was at a non-target and still an undergrad, I found it basically impossible to get a proper internship in finance in Paris, so I eventually moved away from the idea.

Since then, I’ve done quite a bit of research ( several research internships, a few published articles, and various projects ) and I was leaning towards either going into research or doing some kind of engineering after graduating.

A few days ago, I was contacted by someone who said they wanted to chat. We had a Zoom call yesterday and after talking for a while the conversation gradually turned into what was basically an informal interview. Towards the end, I was asked whether I’d be interested in joining the firm next summer as an intern.

The thing is that I’m not sure I’m actually interested in finance anymore. At the same time, the compensation is obviously very attractive and from what I’ve heard, the team and general work environment are supposed to be pretty good, which is making me seriously consider it.

The main issue is that I already have a research internship lined up in the US for next summer which I was genuinely really excited about. Taking this opportunity would mean dropping that internship.

So I’m kind of torn. I could either stick with the research path that I’ve been enjoying and was already excited about, but on the other hand this seems like an opportunity that would be difficult to ignore, even if I’m not currently planning on a career in finance.

Wwyd in this situation ? Is it worth taking this internship and then finding out whether I'd like to pursue that career or should I just stick with what I have been working for for the past 3 years ?
