Institutional Research Sales questions

I understand what it is and where it fits in. Just wondering, is this a lucrative business? Also is it the same as Institutional Equity Sales? What are some moves you can make from Research sales to other sectors of finance?

Really any information would help. Thanks.

Based on yor questions, I would say you don't know what it is or where it fits at all. But that's fine because your asking to clarify.

It's not a lucrative business. Everyone there is trying to tread water. The job involves taking equity publishing research reports and sending them to clients. Your goal is to try to get them to execute stock trades with your bank. Not only are you not generating your own ideas, equities is a shrinking business as clients execute electronically after reading the reports you send them (if they even read them at all).

Institutional equity sales is a salesperson for stocks. As I said, that's a dying business as well, so the pay has collapsed and heads are constantly being cut.

You don't get any tangible, transferable skills doing either.

In short, don't do it.

Is this all because of the change to electronic trading? Also what if you're selling research but not for the purpose of hoping clients but through your bank.

It all works together. Over the past decade electronic trading is cheaper and often more efficient than through a bank. Commissions are down and so pay and head count need to come down. Research sales' job is to attract flow by providing access to research. But if equities flow is down, then you're fighting against the tide.

Clients don't subscribe to research or pay a fee. It's paid for by trading with a bank. Not sure if there's any other model. Couldn't quite grasp your last sentence.
