It's more about your intelligence. And no, I don't think they prefer math majors above Finance/Econ. Quite the opposite, actually. Non-quant prop, IMO, is a dying field, and I'd avoid it. Non-quant HF would be a better path if you're aiming for a more fundamental approach, since their investments are more long-term. Non-quant prop attempting to day-trade would get eaten alive by HFT shops. (look up Schonfeld's letter to traders)

 

It's becoming more and more of a thing yes, but at many prop firms once you get past the initial screening of speed math (which isn't quant anyway), it really depends on the other qualities. Are quants preferred if they also have the same qualities? Of course. But if there is a trade-off, it just depends on the firm, as well as the mix of people they're hiring for that year.

I don't accept sacrifices and I don't make them. ... If ever the pleasure of one has to be bought by the pain of the other, there better be no trade at all. A trade by which one gains and the other loses is a fraud.
